NRN Citizenship
Non- resident Nepalis except individuals residing in SAARC countries may obtain NRN citizenship upon fulfilling certain conditions for the enjoyment of various economic, social and cultural rights. Procedures for Obtaining NRN citizenship is governed by Citizenship Act, 2063 and Citizenship Rules 2063.
Documents Required for obtaining NRN citizenship
- Document to prove that the applicant himself or his/her father, mother, grandfather or grandmother had once been the Nepali citizen. (Copy of Citizenship Certificate)
- Nepali Citizenship Renunciation Letter from District Administration Office
- Proof of being foreign citizen
- Proof of residence in that particular foreign nation
- Pledge to respect and upload Nepalese Constitution and Laws
- Foreign Passport issued by that particular foreign nation.
- Recommendation Letter by the concerned ward.
Process of obtaining NRN citizenship From Nepal
Step 1 : Visit your concerned District Administration Office and carry out the procedure of renouncing your existing Nepali citizenship.
Step 2: After you get Citizenship Renunciation Letter from District Administration Office, fill out an application form for obtaining NRN Citizenship. The application form will be provided by the DAO itself. A sample of it is attached below.
Step 3 : Visit your local ward office for recommendation letter.
Step 4 : You need a person within three generation of your family for verification, as evidence (Sanakhat). Get you application backed by local level recommendation and sanakhat by your relative holding Nepali citizenship and visit DAO.
Step 5 : At DAO, you need to take oath and pledge for respecting and uploading Nepalese Constitution and Laws as well as fulfilling all obligations as a NRN citizen.
Step 6 : After Verification of application, attached documents and upon oath, you will be granted NRN citizenship.
Process of obtaining NRN citizenship From Abroad
Step 1 : Visit the Embassy of Nepal or Consulate General office of Nepal of the country you’re residing and fill up the application.
Step 2: The application is forwarded to concerned DAO along with the opinion within 15 days of receipt of such application.
Step 3 : The application must be verified (sanakhat) by a person within three generation of the applicant’s family.
Step 4 : DAO investigates and checks the authenticity of application and submitted documents. In case of any confusion, DAO may ask for the embassy concerned regarding the validity of the person’s foreign citizenship or passport.
Step 5: After Verification of application, attached documents and upon oath, you will be granted NRN citizenship.
Punishment for maliciously obtaining NRN citizenship
In case it is found that a person has obtained NRN citizenship by furnishing false information, following punishment is imposed:
Imprisonment of 3 months to 1 year or fine of 25 thousand Nrs to 50 thousand.
Cancellation of the obtained NRN citizenship.
